Farmers Markets, by their very nature, epitomize sustainability and green design.  Local farmers provide fresh, local food that is not only healthy, but sustainably grown. They provide a source of local food within a community, not requiring the patron to drive far to get fresh produce. These markets can also be a community hub that allow people to gather for many types of events. They can serve the public as to the benefits of sustainable design by implementing and explaining the benefits of sustainable design and healthy living practices.

To support the concept of sustainability, the market itself can also be designed to be environmentally friendly and sustainable. By applying sustainable design features the market can have less of an environmental impact and be made more energy efficient. For the Caro Farmers Market, we introduced some of these features that will provide energy efficiency, lower life cycle costs, and serve as an educational tool for the general public.

Several design studies were condcuted to determine the best location and design features of the open market.
